Occasionally, here at the Resistance, we get ridiculous ideas. We are also pretty likely to share these with you, in lieu of some actual content. We would like you all to join in, like one great big (happy?) community based around this fledgling website.
Sim City on the SNES is our favourite version of the legendary city-builder. Heaps simpler than its home computer counterpart, and full of excellent little Nintendo touches. What we want to do is take this version and make it multiplayer. A shared experience where everyone adds to the overall build of the metropolis. By sharing a save file and passing it around, everyone involved will contribute towards the final goal. Or not, as the case might be.
Here's how it is going to work.
First of all, you’ll need to grab yourself the ZSnes emulator and [edit: somehow obtain a perfectly legal ROM of] Sim City. It would probably help if you also have a rudimentary grasp of how to get an emulator working.
Follow @MidnightResist on Twitter, and retweet the ‘entry’ tweet to show you’re interested in taking part in this ridiculous event.
What will happen is you play for FIVE YEARS. No more, no less, and perform a quicksave of the state on the end of year tax screen for the fifth year. In this time, do what you want! Leave YOUR mark, or create silent but important contributions to the city.
This is where it gets a bit complicated. What you will need to do is head into the ZSnes directory and find this save state (default location is the same folder in which the Sim City ROM is found). For the sake of ease, extracting ZSnes to a folder on the desktop and dropping the Sim City ROM directly into the folder should keep things running smoothly. You then need to send the Sim City.zst file on to the next person on the list. This will be communicated to you through the @MidnightResist Twitter feed. You also need to send a copy of the state to podcast [at] midnightresistance.co.uk, so we can actually try and carve an article out of this potential mess.
Your ZSnes folder should look something like THIS.
THIS IS THE FILE YOU NEED. If everyone extracts the ZSnes folder to their desktop, it'll mean less faffing with 'save state locations' for everyone else. Obviously, we'll try to help anyone who struggles, but if we can avoid that - BRILLIANT.
Finally, the next person on the list recieves the file, drops the .zst into their ZSnes folder, along with the Sim City ROM, starts the game, loads the save state and begins their run as Mayor of Pisstown. Yes.
Finally - NO CHEATING. If you do, we'll find you AND your contribution won't count.
This will continue until we create a breathtaking metropolis/our civilization burns to the ground/we all get bored - whatever comes first. You in?
