Whenever people talk about eSports I imagine a room full of emaciated dudes playing some MOBA, all never-ending mouse clicks and cooldown timer management, and I just can’t get excited about it at all. Nidhogg, however, is the perfect candidate to be a figurehead eSport. Some kind of weird mix of IK+, Bushido Blade and, perhaps strangest of all, the inch-by-inch nature of American Football. You have to kill your rival and progress to the next screen, with the goal of reaching the final screen, while they’re trying to do the same the other way. All it takes in a simple touch of the end of the rapier to kill one another, so there is always tension. Upon death, you respawn a few seconds later, with another chance to kill your opponent and push the action back the other way. It is dead simple to pick up, even from watching, which makes it perfect for spectators, as everyone can see what exactly makes a fight so intense and exciting within minutes.
