Let’s do a thing.
A few years back at the Eurogamer Expo we had the chance to play the frankly incredible (and winner of our GAME OF SHOW award, for what it’s worth) multiplayer masterpiece - BaraBariBall, by Noah Sasso. Set for release in the Sportsfriendspackage at some point in the future, it is still only playable at events, but it remains one of the finest competitive multiplayer games we’ve ever played. It has that golden combination of being easy to pick up, but with depth and endless advanced tactics with having a simple enough set of rules that anyone can pick up what is going on even in passing, and within a few games will be able to appreciate what exactly a good, bad and spectacular player move is. Think the gameplay of Super Smash Bros, only with the added stress of trying to prevent a ball from falling off the bottom of the screen on your half of the stage’s central line. It is deservedly held in the same regard as titles such as Street Fighter IV and Mount Your Friends, and the sooner more people can play it, the better.
At Loading Bar on SATURDAY 22nd FEBRUARY, we’re going to be running an event for some of the best multiplayer games. The man Noah Sasso has kindly thrown us the latest version of BaraBariBall, and from about 6pm onwards, show up, we’ll all play a few frames of this fantastic little game and if there’s enough interest we’ll fire up a tournament on the night, with the winner being deemed the RADDEST PERSON AROUND. Maybe even a TEAMS TOURNAMENT, to find the RADDEST TEAM AROUND. We understand that the game isn’t freely available yet, but we’ll have ample time for practice before we start any SERIOUS TOURNAMENT ACTION, so show up regardless of how you think you’ll do - we’re all beginners here!
On the subject of pretty much perfect multiplayer games, we’re going to run a Nidhogg tournament on the night, too. Much like BaraBariBall, Nidhogg has been going around the events scene for a few years now, leaving ‘Holy Shit’ moments and arguing mates in its wake. Unlike BaraBariBall you can buy this RIGHT NOW and practice until you’re a total fencing machine, so if you fancy proving yourself to be the best in the land at Nidhogg, get yourself to Loading Bar on Saturday 22nd February.
So, there you go. Big thanks to the Loading Bar folk for allowing us to descend on their premises for more daft multiplayer tournament stuff. We hope to see you all on Saturday 22nd February for an evening of two of the best multiplayer games and a bunch of fancy videogame themed cocktails.
(A THING - if any of you who are thinking of coming that could provide an additional laptop/PC with HDMI out, give @andihero or @2plus2isJoe a shout on Twitter, as we're organising this thing. The more machines, the more GAMES. Also, anyone wearing a MidnightResistance shirt will get a big high five. Any other questions about the event, or if you simply fancy a chat about Dynasty Warriors, feel free to hit either of us up.)
