Microsoft have found the secret way into a Midnight Resistance writer’s heart and signed an exclusive game by the legendary Platinum Games. It’s called Scalebound. The trailer has some lad jumping about with a giant monster but sadly, due to the CG nature of the trailer, that’s all we know for now. Still, it exists!
9. Rainbow Six: Siege
The best Rainbow Six games were the ones where you had to plan an assault on a small, confined area and pull it off with minimal civilian casualties. This looks like a return to the classic R6 formula. Sure, it was alpha footage, but the section of highly scripted multiplayer shown was enough to pique my interest in a franchise that had gotten dull, bloated and had fucked off for a bit.
8. Battlefield Hardline
EA were clearly quite confident in the Visceral helmed Battlefield spin-off, because not only did they give it a substantial live demo, but also released the beta to PS4 owners immediately after the show ended. I’ve played it and it is tremendous. Perhaps the 64 man Battlefields of previous years are to become a thing of the past - this is a focused, action-packed and ridiculously fun multiplayer shooter.
7. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
The Captain Toad sections in Super Mario 3D World were a highlight in one of the best 3D platform games ever made. Short, smart puzzle rooms where you played as Captain Toad, using the Wii U gamepad to seek out hidden stars. “Wouldn’t it be really cool to have a full game of these puzzle rooms”, I thought at the time. Well, it’s coming in 2015! Cheers, Nintendo!
6. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Fucking look at it! Bloody hell! The Witcher games have represented something of a graphical benchmark whenever they’ve been released and this one looks to continue that trend, but a truly open game world and what looks like an action game influence to the RPG combat it looks like the gameplay will more than match the visuals too. There was more than a strong whiff of Dragon’s Dogma about the footage shown and that is a very good thing indeed.
5. Grim Fandango HD
Can you think of a better format to play Grim Fandango on than the Vita? You can’t. It’s a perfect match. One of the best adventure games, full of great puzzles, hilarious dialogue and a brilliant story, and it’ll be an essential purchase when it finally gets released. If you haven’t already played it - I am insanely jealous.
Project Beast has turned out to be BLOODBORNE, the PS4 exclusive by FROM Software and, perhaps most importantly, helmed by Dark Souls director Hideki Miyazaki. The CG trailer during the conference was pretty rad but gave nothing away, but a leaked gameplay video shows that Bloodborne appears to owe a bit of debt to Devil May Cry, as well as Demon’s and Dark Souls. My excitement levels are immediately through the roof for this one.
Splatoon not only looked great, but showed how effective Nintendo’s approach to E3 is. It showed that they are ahead of the curve. Splatoon is a team based multiplayer… splat ‘em up, I guess, where you claim territory by covering it in paint. I thought it looked a bit generic at first, but this Nintendo Direct allowed the young team of developers to just talk about their game, carefully explaining the mechanics and showing practical uses of tactics and gameplay. By the end of the video, Splatoon looked like a game set to be Nintendo’s big competitive multiplayer cornerstone - above Mario Kart and even Smash Bros.
2. No Man’s Sky
Another carefully crafted slice of gameplay to show off No Man’s Sky, but it genuinely looks like something really special. Flying between beautiful looking random planets full of undiscovered animals, plants and unique ecosystems, while taking part in space battles that travel from deep space to the surface of a newly found world, No Man’s Sky is looking like the dream game for someone who has grown up on Elite, found ourselves playing the X Wing vs Tie Fighter and Colony Wars games through our years, wished Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter was a much better game and has been hammering FTL just for a fix of intergalactic exploration and combat.
1. The Legend of Zelda
